Breakthrough - What's The Big Idea?
A 7- Step System for Developing Unexpected and Profitable Ideas
by Paul Kurnit and Steve Lance

For our younger readers there was a time when there wasn’t light beer. Miller Brewing had a game- changing idea: producing beer that had half the calories. They were going to brand it as “diet beer.” Frothier heads prevailed and they made their breakthrough idea much more appealing to the young male - Tastes Great /Less Filling, and the industry changed. If you prefer other uses for your grains such as baking, consider Arm and Hammer Baking Soda. For generations it was used a couple teaspoons at a time in the mixing bowl. Someone had a breakthrough idea to market it as a deodorizer, and now we use it a whole box at a time in our refrigerators and periodically pour it down the sink. Now that’s marketing!
We all have big ideas from time to time, but what do we do with them? In BREAKTHROUGH, authors Kurnit and Lance present a 7 step process to develop our ideas and make them a monetized reality. Although their process centers on working in larger corporations, the process is valuable no matter what the size of your company. Here are the steps:
1. Put an End to Business as Usual
2. Get Business Buy-in
3. Organize the Team and Process
4. Land on the Bid Idea
5. Build Momentum for the Idea
6. Develop the Plan
7. The Launch
The difference in us and them is that we have ideas and they have ideas and a process.
So what is your big Idea? Because as we all know, if we do not develop our idea, someone else will and we will see it out there sooner than later.
